The Criminal Profiler can provide a variety of support services which are determined by the needs of the investigation. All of the services involve the analysis and interpretation of an offenders' behaviour as exhibited throughout the crime scene(s). Criminal Behaviour Analysis provides investigators with insight into the personality of offenders who commit crimes of interpersonal violence. Criminal Profilers are frequently utilized by investigators in a consultative situation to provide behaviour related advice and to assist with crime scene re-construction in the early stages of an investigation. Criminal Behaviour Analysis is a process of examining crimes which involve interpersonal violence, a sexual component, mental illness, bizarre or unusual activity, threats, as well as cases where the manner of death is in dispute. This service is designed to assist the investigative group in identifying and prioritizing potential suspects. Investigators typically receive a written report detailing a variety of analytical opinions and the reasons for those opinions. Also included is a personality description of the type of person who most likely committed the crime. Investigative suggestions are offered to assist investigators in applying the analysis operationally. This product requires an in-depth analysis of the crime(s) involved.
An indirect personality assessment provides a pragmatic understanding of a person (personality, beliefs, motivations, emotional trigger points, strengths and weaknesses and so on) based on information from people who know the subject, but without directly speaking to the subject themselves. This is not a clinical personality assessment that can be provided by a psychologist or psychiatrist, nor is it a substitute for one.
Indirect personality assessments are most often used in preparing for a formal interview of the subject, such as a forensic interview, deposition, examination-in-chief, cross-examination or any other setting where it is important to have an understanding of the person being interviewed before the interview begins.
LGIG investigators are able to discretely gather the required background information. LGIG’s Behavioural Sciences associates are able to interpret that information to provide insight into many aspects of the subject’s character and personality.
The application of covert operations to private sector investigations is a niche where Lions Gate will excel. Lions Gate has assembled a group of trained operatives who have all been certified through the RCMP Undercover Program and all are experienced veterans of this craft. Covert Operatives are investigative tools that are highly valued within the law enforcement community. These operatives are able to secure evidence that cannot be obtained through the traditional police investigative methodologies. The introduction of well planned covert operations into private sector investigations will change the landscape of investigations and will demonstrate very positive results to clients, particularly in the area of internal theft.
An equivocal death analysis, used when the manner of death (accident, suicide or homicide) is in question, provides an opinion regarding the manner of death, based on a through review of all available information. Each piece of evidence is examined to determine which manner of death (accident, suicide or homicide) it supports; recognizing that one piece of evidence may support more than one option. The analysis process and final product can often be persuasive in settling on the most probable manner of death when an unequivocal decision is simply not available.
In an investigation where the manner of death is open for debate, frequently information is lacking concerning one of the possibility options, most often that of suicide. LGIG investigators are available to make the necessary enquiries in a discrete and sensitive manner.
Geographic profiling is an investigative support technique designed to provide investigative assistance in cases of violent interpersonal and serial crime. Geographic profiling examines the offender's hunting behaviour and target selection process which can be interpreted to help focus an investigation towards the offender's residence or other significant anchor point. This process can assist with prioritizing suspects and locations, and can be utilized to develop investigative tactics that can be deployed in the area defined by the geoprofile. Geographic profiling strategies have been found to compliment traditional investigative methods by providing a geographic focus that optimizes the search for the offender. Depending on the dynamics of the case, various geographic analysis methodologies can be applied. This service is designed to provide the investigator with a geographic focus for the investigation. A series of maps is provided which identifies the high probability area for the offender's anchor point. These maps in addition to a detailed report can identify the "optimal search path" to the offender.
Geographic profiling and knowledge about the geography of crime is useful information for investigators, for people tasked with the evaluation of evidence and for determining the relevance of crime locations and evidence in relation to a specific crime or event.
The knowledge of crime geography, environmental decision making, in combination with human tracking skills can be a useful methodology in missing person cases and in cases where a disappearance is suspicious.
This product is designed to provide the investigator with an approximate idea of how far an offender can travel in a given period of time. Calculations can be done on an offender who is walking, jogging, riding a bicycle or driving a vehicle.
Clients may request assistance mapping out locations related to an incident, a crime or series of events, travel routes, delivery routes or other situations where a map or visual representation would be useful. Mapping can be useful when reconstructing historical events, for presentation purposes for briefings, court and for providing a visual perspective for investigative follow-up.
A behavioural and / or geographic consultation, in the early stages of an investigation, can provide a perspective or an interpretation of the facts that may not surface during the course of the traditional investigative process. This process is less than a full profile or personality assessment, and changes as more information is known. This service can be useful in generating early leads, providing an alternative investigative direction, identifying the significance of existing information or interpreting the crime scene.
Behavioural and geographic analysis and consultations can provide investigators a means of examining a case or series of cases from a much different perspective. During the early stages of an investigation, advice can be provided about the behavioural and geographic components of the offender(s), crime(s) and crime site(s). Suggestions regarding investigative tactics and approaches, threat assessments and the utility of covert operations can flow from this process.
Sensitive investigations, stalled investigations, investigations outside the realm or interest of law enforcement and investigations where another perspective is required, are all suitable cases for the members of Lions Gate. Our collective training and experience places us the unique position of being able to offer a perspective that few police officers or private sector investigators can. It is the collective consultative expertise of our group that is our strength.
A skill used to help assess the truthfulness or validity of a threatening statement, a witness statement or a suspect statement. A proper analysis of a person’s statement can help investigators to develop themes for questioning to probe contentious areas within the statement. Statement analysis is also useful in the litigation process when assessing the reliability/credibility of a victim, witness or suspect statement.
Interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects is a skill that is developed through training and experience. The purpose of a statement is to solicit information in the form of supporting evidence or a confession. A thorough understanding of the case, the issues, the objective and the person being interviewed are all required by the interview team prior to designing the method of approach and the themes to be used in the interview or interrogation.
Physical surveillance is a skill that can be required in various environments and situations. Surveillance operations can be performed by a single, skilled operative or in a team configuration depending on the needs of the file and the challenge of the target. The surveillance environment can change from urban to rural to remote and the approach of the operative(s) must be adaptable to those changes. LGIG has operatives that are trained to work in these environments.

Human Tracking is a visual tracking skill that was learned from the Tactical Tracking Operations School in the United States. It has several applications for law enforcement and in some situations, for private sector clients. Law Enforcement can utilize tactical tracking for a variety of applications, including locating and capturing persons who have fled into a rural or remote environment, locating and collecting evidence, locating crime scenes, collecting intelligence, and search and rescue operations among other things.
The knowledge and skill of a human tracker can be enhanced when combined with the knowledge and skill of a geographic profiler. Together, knowledge about human movement through the environment, human decision making processes, local area knowledge, knowledge of human behavior, specifically criminal behaviour and “woodsmanship”, can have private sector applications. This knowledge, skill and experience can be applied to missing person’s cases and suspicious disappearances. An assessment of the overall geography of an area, when analyzed in association with the specific dynamics of the case, may provide a different perspective or surface other possibilities regarding the unresolved case.
